EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Foreign affairs

MEPs call for stronger European action against instrumentalisation of water

17/06/2026 (Agence Europe)With the adoption of the report by Leoluca Orlando (Greens/EFA, Italian) (431 votes in favour, 111 against and 103 abstentions), the European Parliament called, on Wednesday 17 June, for stronger European action on international water management. Parliament is therefore urging the EU to step up its response to the growing use of water as a tool of political pressure, coercion and war. Members of the European Parliament want water-related risks to be better integrated into conflict prevention efforts. They stress the need to establish responsibility in cases of deliberate targeting, destruction or denial of access to water infrastructure and resources in conflict situations, and support legal initiatives aimed at ensuring justice and redress for affected communities. Parliament calls for adequate funding for water governance under the EU’s next long-term budget. See the report: https://aeur.eu/f/me0 (CG)
