12/06/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 11 June, the European Union and Australia reaffirmed their shared commitment to combatting terrorism and violent extremism during their annual dedicated dialogue, which was held in Brussels. Faced with increasingly complex regional and global threats, discussions focused on the growing number of extremist acts targeting religious communities, particularly attacks fuelled by anti-Semitic and Islamophobic hatred. The two partners also warned of the risks of young people being radicalised online and the rise of so-called ‘nihilistic’ extremism. The meeting provided an opportunity to reaffirm their coordinated approach to combatting jihadist groups in the Middle East, Africa and South-East Asia. Both delegations emphasised that this cooperation must be firmly rooted in the strict respect for international law and human rights. (JM)
