06/05/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 6 May, MEPs on the European Parliament’s Employment and Social Affairs Committee endorsed the provisional agreement reached with the EU Council on updated rules for the coordination of social security systems - by 47 votes to 3 with 4 abstentions. This provisional agreement, reached on 22 April after almost ten years of negotiations (see EUROPE 13854/3), was approved for EU Member States on 29 April (see EUROPE 13859/11). If formally adopted by the European Parliament, in a plenary session, and the EU Council, this deal will introduce clearer criteria for determining which country’s social security legislation applies and will promote cooperation between Member States.
