The fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CMS CoP15) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals is being held from 23 to 29 March in Campo Grande, Brazil. It is dedicated to strengthening the global protection of threatened migratory species.
The high-level meeting will examine an ambitious set of actions, including the strengthening of coordinated global conservation of migratory species and the protection of 44 additional species of fish, birds and terrestrial animals.
The EU supports all the proposals aimed at granting the highest level of protection to the species deemed to be most at risk. These proposals concern, in particular, the giant otter, several species of seabird and various species of shark, which are facing overexploitation and habitat loss.
The European Commission also supports the adoption of resolutions, decisions and specific action plans for certain notable species. This is the case for the European eel, whose populations have plummeted, the shortfin mako shark, threatened by intensive fishing, and the Eurasian lynx, affected by habitat fragmentation.
Reducing incidental catch is one of the EU’s key priorities, particularly in the marine environment. The Commission is calling for stronger measures to limit by-catches and reduce the impact of fishing activities on non-target species.
