Brussels, 19/03/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 19 March, in the run-up to World Water Day 2026, the 43 Member States of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) adopted three major regional strategies aimed at strengthening water, food and energy security by 2040, against a backdrop of accelerating climate disruption. They focus on the water-energy-food-ecosystems nexus, the financing of the water sector and the digital transformation of water systems, and aim to respond to growing pressure on resources at a time when the Mediterranean basin is warming up around 20% faster than the global average, exposing more than 500 million people to increased risks of droughts, floods and water stress. These strategies represent the most significant advance in water governance in the region since the first Ministerial Meeting on Water, proposing integrated approaches, sustainable financing tools and greater use of digital technologies to modernise ageing infrastructure.
