Russian invasion of Ukraine / Russia

European Commission recognises that discussions with Vladimir Putin will be necessary, but that time is not yet come

12/01/2026 (Agence Europe)After French President Emmanuel Macron (see EUROPE 13776/2) and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (see EUROPE 13783/20), European Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho explained on Monday 12 January that “at some point” Europe will have to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We are working very, very hard for peace in Ukraine. Now, peace in Ukraine depends on one single person: (...) President Putin. So, obviously, at some point, there will have to be talks also with President Putin”, she stressed. Going on to add: “We’re not seeing any signs by President Putin to be engaging in such talks. So we’re not there yet”. (CG)
