European Commission analyses 23 EU projects to advance equality through research and innovation

To promote gender equality through research and innovation, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation published a report on Tuesday 6 January, produced as part of the Booster 5.1 service.

This Commission mechanism - dedicated primarily to gender equality and institutional change through research and innovation - is responsible for analysing and promoting the results of research projects already funded by the European Union. The aim is to use existing projects to identify the most effective practices, tools and methods for supporting the EU’s political priorities.

The study covers 23 EU-funded projects launched between 2017 and 2023, 17 of which have already been completed.

285 results were analysed to cover a range of issues such as promoting women’s careers in research, work-life balance, combating gender-based violence, reducing the pay gap and gender mainstreaming in research and innovation content.

The document also points out the major role, in terms of long-term transformation, of gender equality plans - compulsory since 2022 for organisations wanting to access funding from the Horizon Europe programme - particularly with regard to governance, human resources management and institutional culture.

The analysis also highlights the growing importance of an intersectional approach and calls for continued efforts to disseminate the tools and practices identified.
