07/01/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 6 January, the European Commission launched a call for evidence with a view to a future review of its open source software strategy, which it sees as an important pillar in the development of the EU’s technological sovereignty. The institution hopes to give a boost to free software developers, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence, the cloud and cybersecurity. Open source has “great potential to support a diverse range of high-quality, secure digital solutions that are valid alternatives to proprietary solutions”, the Commission explains. In other words, it is an interesting way of breaking away from the big American digital monopolies. This initiative is intended to complement the forthcoming presentation of legislation on the development of the cloud and AI. The call for evidence is open until 3 February.
