On Monday 25 August, the Commission launched a call for evidence running until 22 September, on the review of ecodesign requirements for electric motors and variable speed drives, with a view to proposing a delegated regulation by mid-2029.
In 2019, the EU adopted a revised ecodesign measure for electric motors and variable speed drives. This measure sets minimum energy efficiency and information requirements for these products, and will generate substantial energy savings for end users, the document states.
The EU is currently reviewing this measure in the light of technological advances, identifying areas where additional energy savings, technological improvements, reduced environmental impacts and an improved circular economy can be achieved. The regulation should make a substantial contribution to reducing the environmental impact of electric motors and variable speed drives (electricity savings of 9.6 TWh by 2030).
The Commission also explains that the market and technological progress may have improved the efficiency of electric motors and variable speed drives and that, as a result, the requirements may have become obsolete.
