On Tuesday 22 April, the European organisations Independent Retail Europe and Euro Coop sent the Chairs and Vice-Chairs of the European Parliament’s Committees on Agriculture and the Internal Market a letter detailing their concerns about the Commission’s proposal on cross-border enforcement of the Directive on unfair trading practices in the food supply chain.
This proposal is currently being discussed by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU and is part of the December 2024 package of proposals following protests by EU farmers (see EUROPE 13616/12).
According to organisations representing Europe’s retail sector and consumer cooperatives, the Commission’s proposal contains provisions which “put in jeopardy the integrity of the single market for food products” and risks “to undermine” the EU legal acquis related to the applicable law and competent jurisdictions in cross-border contracts.
The text “creates a major single market issue”, as the lists of prohibited practices differ considerably between Member States, according to the letter sent to the MEPs.
