Several MEPs in Washington to defend European regulation in face of attacks from US giants

A parliamentary delegation from the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) travelled to Washington from Tuesday 24 to Friday 28 February to meet several representatives of major tech and digital companies and discuss European legislation.

The seven MEPs - Anna Cavazzini (Greens/EFA, German), Andreas Schwab (EPP, German), Pablo Arias Echeverría (EPP, Spanish), Christel Schaldemose (S&D, Danish), Klára Dostálová (PfE, Czech), Piotr Müller (ECR, Polish) and Sandro Gozi (Renew Europe, Italian) - met with Republican Congressman Jim Jordan, members of the US Chamber of Commerce and experts from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

According to Anna Cavazzini, who headed the delegation, the discussions were “constructive” and the American representatives were open to “better understanding the DMA’s objective” and the various European legislations.

It has become clear that these attacks [on European regulation] are far from representing the views of the majority of stakeholders, but rather those of the Silicon Valley tech giants. Their business model is based on toothless self-regulation, which is at odds with the way we do things in Europe”, she stated in a press release published on Friday 28 February.

This trip takes place in a context of renewed tensions between the United States and the European Union, against a backdrop of trade war and accusations of censorship (see EUROPE 13577/12) by major US platforms. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
