With the European Commission due to present its new roadmap for women’s rights on 5 March, the European Disability Forum (EDF) issued a statement on Thursday 27 February calling on the EU to include women with disabilities, who it stresses are still too often overlooked when it comes to laws and policies.
At its meeting on 21 and 22 February, EDF's Women's Committee called on the Commissioner for Equality, Hadja Lahbib, and the relevant services to ensure specific measures to improve their rights and living conditions.
The organisation's demands include a ban on forced sterilisation, the ambitious implementation of the Directive on combating violence against women, the fight against poverty and discrimination in employment, and the maintenance of disability allowances regardless of family status.
EDF is also calling for increased funding for organisations that support the empowerment of women with disabilities, and for them to be given a greater say in European decision-making processes.
“Nothing about us without us”, proclaims the Forum, thereby using this motto to reaffirm its commitment to an inclusive and equitable future.
