Following the lead of Céline Imart (EPP, French), thirty MEPs from the EPP, ECR and PfE groups, in a letter dated 27 January and obtained by Agence Europe, called on the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, to put an end to the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), following media reports that Israeli hostages held by the terrorist organisation Hamas were being held captive on UNRWA premises.
According to these MEPs, the UN agency has contravened all its missions and helped a terrorist organisation to hide hostages, “which is politically, morally and legally highly reprehensible”.
“As UNRWA is also financed by the European budget, we, Members of the European Parliament, representing various European countries and political parties, call on you to put an end to the operations of UNRWA, which contravene the neutrality of the United Nations and do great harm to your essential work and to the image of the organisation you represent”, they argued.
