According to a Eurobarometer survey published on Thursday, 9 January, Europeans’ support for the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has reached its highest level since 2007.
Of those surveyed, 78% said they were familiar with the CAP, and over 70% of respondents agreed that through the CAP, the EU is fulfilling its role in providing high-quality food that is safe, healthy, and sustainable.
Most EU citizens believe that through the CAP, the EU is fulfilling its role in ensuring a stable supply of food at all times (81%).
Moreover, approximately seven out of ten respondents are of the opinion that the CAP contributes to [ensuring] sustainable management of natural resources (72%), to strengthening the role of farmers in the food chain (70%), and to developing research and digital solutions to support the agriculture and food sectors (71%).
More than six out of ten respondents also believe that the CAP helps reduce regional disparities (66%) and encourages young people to enter the agricultural sector (63%).
Of those surveyed, 92% affirm that agriculture and rural areas are important for the EU’s future.
Finally, 56% of respondents indicate that the level of financial support that the EU gives farmers to help them stabilise their incomes is fair—being an increase of 10 percentage points since 2022 and the highest level since 2013.
