07/01/2025 (Agence Europe) – In 2024, 74% of all kitchen waste produced in the EU still ended up in landfills or incinerators, according to the NGO Zero Waste Europe and the LIFE BIOBEST consortium, despite the obligation on Member States to collect bio-waste separately for one year or to apply home composting solutions, as provided for in Article 22 of the Waste Framework Directive revised in 2018 (see EUROPE 12024/25). “This represents 45 million tonnes of food waste that is not properly managed”, Zero Waste Europe said on Tuesday 7 January. The revision of the Waste Directive also set more ambitious targets for the re-use and recycling of municipal waste (55% by 2025, 60% by 2030 and 65% by 2035). (FS)
