12/11/24 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 11 November, a court in Rome inflicted a further setback on Giorgia Meloni’s migration policy by asking the European courts to rule on the detention of migrants transferred to Albania, who will return to Italy in the meantime, AFP reported. The judges decided to refer the matter to the Court of Justice of the European Union to ensure that Italian legislation complies with European legislation. For reasons related to legal time limits, the seven migrants concerned (who are of Egyptian and Bangladeshi nationality) “will return to Italy within the next few hours”, according to AFP. In October, a few days after the launch of the arrangement agreed between Italy and Albania in 2023, the Rome court annulled the detention of the first 12 migrants taken to Albania, citing a recent CJEU judgment on countries of origin considered “safe” by host countries. The government subsequently adopted a new decree. (SP)
