Council of Europe lends ‘comprehensive’ support to Moldova in receiving people displaced by war in Ukraine

Present at the international conference “Protecting the human rights of displaced persons” which took place in Chișinău on Tuesday 5 November, the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe on Migration and Refugees, David Best, confirmed the organisation’s support for Moldova in receiving people displaced by the war in Ukraine.

This support - expressed in the project entitled “Strengthening the Human Rights Protection of Refugees and Migrants in the Republic of Moldova” - is based on Council of Europe standards, in particular the case law of the European Court of Human Rights, and on a set of best practices designed to establish “resilient and sustainable” systems.

The project also aims to build professional capacity in sectors such as social protection, health, education, policing and so on.

It also calls for psychological support services to be set up and for the necessary information to be made available.

In his opening address, Adrian Efros, Moldova’s Minister of the Interior, said that 1.2 million Ukrainian citizens had crossed the Moldovan border, and that over 100,000 of them had chosen to stay for the long term.

We will continue our efforts to build an inclusive legislative framework, ensure access to essential services and integrate refugees into the country’s economic and social life”, he added, before welcoming the support of the Council of Europe and other international partners.
