24/10/24 (Agence Europe) – The European glass container industry is highlighting the urgent need for access to affordable, low-carbon energy, as detailed in a report by the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE) published on Thursday 24 October. At present, 80% of the industry’s carbon emissions come from the combustion of natural gas, thereby making the transition to cleaner energy sources essential. One of the priorities is the gradual replacement of existing glass furnaces with furnaces that can operate using low-carbon technologies. To modernise infrastructures and decarbonise production by 2050, the industry estimates that an additional investment of €20 billion will be needed, on top of the €600 million that is invested annually in innovation and decarbonisation.
