EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / China

European Parliament calls on EU to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organisations

On Thursday 24 October, the European Parliament adopted by 432 votes to 60 with 71 abstentions a resolution condemning China’s continued military provocations against Taiwan and its “misinterpretation” of United Nations resolution 2758 (see EUROPE 13510/4).

MEPs believe that this resolution - which recognises that the representatives of the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) are the only legitimate representatives of China at the United Nations - takes no position on Taiwan.

They therefore call on the EU and Member States to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organisations such as the World Health Organization, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

In addition, the MEPs are calling on the UN to grant Taiwanese nationals and journalists the right of access to its premises.

On the security front, the resolution denounces the fact that China’s military exercises have intensified, particularly in its own neighbourhood, such as the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. MEPs therefore consider that the EU and its Member States should strengthen their own maritime capacities in the region.

They are also concerned about the renewed commitment of China and Russia to strengthening their military ties.

The resolution supports the ‘One China’ policy and strongly condemns statements by Chinese President Xi Jinping that the People’s Republic of China will never renounce the right to use force against Taiwan.

MEPs point out that the use of coercive measures to achieve unification is contrary to international law.
