On Tuesday 10 September, the European Commission will launch a €2 million project funded by the EU4Health programme to take concrete action to combat ‘long’ Covid, which refers to the long-term after-effects of the disease.
The project will be managed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and will focus on seven key areas: defining ‘long’ Covid, developing a surveillance system, promoting the exchange of information between healthcare professionals, providing clinical guidelines and recommendations to Member States, supporting patients and carers affected, assessing the social and economic consequences of these sequelae and identifying research gaps and needs.
The Commission will also create a group on ‘long’ Covid so that stakeholders and patient groups can share their experiences and knowledge (see EUROPE 13142/30).
This project “highlights once again the Commission’s commitment and determination in addressing this disease and supporting patients and their families in every way possible”, commented Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
