26/08/24 (Agence Europe) – On 22 August, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service said that the EU took note of the release of several political prisoners in Belarus, convicted for taking part in peaceful protests after the 2020 fraudulent presidential elections. “We also take note of the fact that some of those released were prisoners requiring urgent medical assistance and call on the authorities to provide all prisoners with adequate medical care”, the spokesperson stressed in a press release. The spokesperson urged the Belarusian authorities to “immediately and unconditionally” release all political prisoners, “often held in life-threatening conditions”. According to the spokesperson, there are still more than 1,300 political prisoners in Belarus, some of whom have been denied any possibility of communicating with the outside world for more than 18 months.
