150 European citizens, members of the European Citizens’ Panel on Tackling Hatred in Society, made 21 recommendations to the European Commission and national authorities at the Panel’s final session, held in Brussels from 17 to 19 May.
Some of the recommendations are aimed at MEPs and the at times false information they may disseminate online.
The committee proposes creating a ‘code of conduct’, backed by a group of trusted independent experts responsible for monitoring its implementation, which MEPs would be required to respect.
The Panel also suggests the possibility of regulating online anonymity in order to combat the most hateful speech.
The information gathered by the Panel and the citizen engagement platform must be considered by the college of Commissioners and serve as input to the European Commission’s future work on combating hate speech and hate crime.
