At the Agriculture Council meeting in Brussels on Monday 27 May, Denmark, supported by the Czech, Estonian, Finnish, Irish, Lithuanian, Portuguese and Spanish delegations, called for the rapid adoption of the proposed legislation governing the use of new genomic techniques.
The Belgian Presidency of the EU Council has submitted a compromise proposal on the proposal governing the use of NGTs (see EUROPE 13414/4) to the EU Council working group for discussion. No solution has yet been found.
In a note, Denmark praised the merits of NGTs. Most of the ministers who spoke supported the rapid adoption of an EU Council position on the subject, while the European Parliament has already adopted its own.

Poland and Slovenia were cautious about the use of NGTs, while Germany stressed that it did not yet have a position on the subject.
“We need solutions that meet the real needs of farmers and an impact study based on scientific evidence”, says Poland. The Netherlands has supported the adoption of legislation in this area, as have Italy, France and the Czech Republic. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
