The European Union is continuing to make progress towards digitising judicial cooperation, with the potential for closer collaboration between the European Agency for Judicial Cooperation (Eurojust) and the EU Agency for the operational management of large-scale IT systems in the area of freedom, security and justice (eu-LISA).
During a meeting in The Hague on Thursday 7 March, the Executive Director of eu-LISA, Agnès Diallo, and the President of Eurojust, Ladislav Hamran, stressed the importance of this cooperation for the future of digital criminal justice in the EU.
Discussions focused on projects such as the interoperability of European digital systems with national systems, the platform for collaboration between joint investigation teams and the European Criminal Records Information System - Third Country Nationals (ECRIS-TCN).
The use of artificial intelligence in judicial cooperation was also considered.
This initiative is part of the EU’s efforts to modernise and secure cross-border judicial communication, illustrated by the development of the e-CODEX platform, the computerised system for cross-border electronic exchange of data in the field of judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters, and the measures adopted last year (see EUROPE 13311/20).
