Member States agree to establish Operation Aspides

09/02/24 (Agence Europe) – EU Member States have approved the establishment of the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy military operation in the Red Sea, Aspides, a European source confirmed to EUROPE on Friday 9 February. The mission is due to be officially launched at the Foreign Affairs Council on 19 February. Italy has announced that it will provide the Force Commander for the operation, which aims to protect merchant ships by intercepting attacks against them. The mission will also act as a deterrent and strengthen maritime threat analysis (see EUROPE 13340/23). (CG)
