09/02/2024 (Agence Europe) – The Joint European Torus (JET), the world’s largest nuclear fusion experiment, achieved a new record for energy produced during its final and conclusive experimental campaign on 3 October 2023, announced the European EUROfusion consortium on Thursday 8 February, following the verification and validation of the scientific data from the deuterium-tritium (DT3) experiments. In total, 69 megajoules of energy were produced in five seconds using 0.2 milligrams of fuel, surpassing the previous world record of 59 MJ set in 2022. More than 300 scientists from all European fusion laboratories took part in the experiments, which were carried out in the European facility located at the UKAEA (United Kingdom). The DT3 experimental campaign demonstrated the reliability of JET’s operating methods, which are essential to the success of the international experimental reactor ITER, currently under construction.
