08/02/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 8 February, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it found that Serbia had not respected its commitments to “free and fair” elections (461 votes in favour, 53 against and 43 abstentions) (see EUROPE 13345/42) during the last legislative elections, in which irregularities were noted by international observers. After debating the situation in the country at the previous plenary session, MEPs believe that the secrecy of the vote was violated, voter registration manipulated and signatures forged. They also deplore the lack of an institutional response to the “serious suspicions of electoral manipulation and abuse hanging over the outgoing candidates”, and in particular call for EU funding to be suspended on the grounds of serious rule of law violations.
