29/01/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 29 January, EU High Representative Josep Borrell reaffirmed the support of the EU and its Member States for Australia, after the country announced 6 days earlier that it had identified the cybercriminal who stole millions of records containing personal information, including names, dates of birth, national insurance numbers and sensitive medical information, from health services provider Medibank and posted them on the Dark Web in November 2022. While Canberra has decided to impose sanctions on the perpetrator of the attack, the EU has said it is “determined to fight cybercriminals by strengthening cross-border law enforcement cooperation against ransomware”. “We collectively continue to monitor the threat landscape”, said Mr Borrell, while the number of attacks targeting the healthcare sector has increased considerably since the Covid-19 pandemic.
