Sweden could join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office “in the course of the year”, announced the Swedish Minister for Justice, Gunnar Strömmer

26/01/2024 (Agence Europe)On his arrival at the informal meeting of EU Justice Ministers in Brussels on Friday 26 January, Swedish Minister Gunnar Strömmer expressed the Scandinavian country’s desire to join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), which will be set up in 2021 (see EUROPE 12729/11) to combat offences against the EU’s financial interests. “Yesterday, the Swedish government submitted the legislation to our ‘Council on Legislation’ in order to examine the changes” and make EPPO membership possible “during the course of this year”, he said. The European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, welcomed this news, following Poland’s integration into EPPO last December (see EUROPE 13315/7), hoping that this would pave the way for countries such as Ireland and Hungary.
