European Commission pressing Pristina for final report on investigation into attack on Kosovar police officers last September

Last week the European Commission asked Pristina for a final report on the investigation into the attack by Serbian militants on police officers in northern Kosovo (see EUROPE 13257/21).

While potential measures could be taken by the Commission against Belgrade if evidence of the Serbian government’s involvement is provided, Kosovo considers that this has already been demonstrated.

Questioned by Euractiv, European Commission spokesman Peter Stano assured that the Commission had not yet received the final report.

On 24 September, a group of armed Serbian men attacked Kosovar police officers in Banjska, in the north of the country, near the border between Kosovo and Serbia. A Kosovar policeman was killed in the attack.

Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, accused Belgrade of being behind what the Commission described as an “attack”, while the Serbian government quickly denied the facts, blaming Mr Kurti and his “provocations” against the Serbs.

This event rekindled already high tensions between Belgrade and Pristina (see EUROPE 13230/19) and dealt a further blow to attempts to implement the agreement on the normalisation of relations between the two countries (see EUROPE 13295/4). (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
