EU election observation mission recommends comprehensive electoral reform

17/11/23 (Agence Europe)Comprehensive electoral reform is needed in Zimbabwe, the EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) says in its final report on the 23 August elections (see EUROPE 13239/6), published on Friday 17 November. The EU-EOM recommends in particular: - that measures be taken to ensure that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) can operate free from political influence, including the removal of government approval of its regulations; - that the ZEC provide the public with full and timely information on all aspects of the preparations for the elections and that it publish the results of the elections, broken down by polling station, in a timely manner; - that the law on the maintenance of peace and order be amended to limit its discretionary application restricting the right to assemble; - a review of the procedures for appointing judges.
