17/11/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Union said on Thursday 16 November that it was “deeply disturbed” by the intensification of attempts to undermine the results of the presidential elections in Guatemala through “selective and arbitrary legal and procedural actions, such as the recent raids and the detention orders for members of the political party Movimiento Semilla”, via the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) (see EUROPE 13265/37). These actions threatened the democratic system and the stability of the country, he added in a press release. The spokesman stressed that the EU Election Observation Mission had detected “no fraud” in the presidential elections won by the leader of the Semilla movement, Bernardo Arévalo. He also warned of the inevitable negative “repercussions” on bilateral relations between the EU and Guatemala should obstructions to the integrity of the electoral process persist. (MB)
