EU Member States confirm interinstitutional agreement on organic pet food

On Monday 2 October, the EU Member States represented on the Special Committee on Agriculture (SCA) confirmed the interinstitutional agreement on organic pet food for dogs and cats.

The EU Council will formally adopt this text (https://aeur.eu/f/8tv ) on 9 October.

Under the agreement, pet food may be labelled with the EU organic production logo if at least 95% (by weight) of its agricultural ingredients are organic.

Organic pet food labelled in accordance with national rules or private standards between 1 January 2022 and the date on which the regulation comes into force may still be sold while stocks last. Producers will have six months before they have to use the EU organic logo on their products (see EUROPE 13248/14).

At the SCA, the European Commission also provided information on the implementation of the 2021 action plan for the development of organic production. In particular, the actions are designed to meet demand and ensure consumer confidence, address the supply side (Common Agricultural Policy instruments) and aim to strengthen the sustainability of organic farming.
