21/09/23 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 20 September, the European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) approved by a narrow majority (29 votes in favour, 23 against, 2 abstentions) the appointment of the German Claudia Buch, currently Deputy Governor of the Bundesbank, to head the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM), replacing the Italian Andrea Enria for a five-year term starting in January 2024. This position needs to be confirmed at a plenary session in October. At her hearing earlier on Wednesday, Ms Buch promised to cooperate closely with Parliament (see EUROPE 13254/24). The coordinators of the ECON committee had previously informally voted in favour of the other shortlisted candidate, Margarita Delgado, Vice-Governor of the Bank of Spain. Some believe that this process is politically linked to that of the EIB Presidency (see EUROPE 13251/10). (MB)
