20/09/2023 (Agence Europe) – The High Representative of the Union, Josep Borrell, reminded Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian of the EU’s concerns at a meeting in New York on Wednesday 20 September. According to a European External Action Service press release, Mr Borrell expressed the EU’s strong condemnation of the arbitrary detentions of numerous EU citizens in Iran, calling for their release. He also reiterated the EU’s position on the “very concerning” human rights situation in the country, calling for fundamental freedoms to be respected. Mr Borrell again urged the government to end its military cooperation with Russia. Finally, regarding Iran’s nuclear programme, he stressed the importance of following the path of de-escalation, highlighting the need to find a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue within the framework of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
