04/09/2023 (Agence Europe) – The New York Times revealed, on Monday 4 September, that Johan Floderus, a Swedish citizen working for the European External Action Service, had been imprisoned in Iran for more than 500 days after being arrested during a private trip. When questioned by the media, EEAS spokesman Peter Stano stated that the EU was aware of and was following “very closely” the situation of “a Swedish national detained in Iran”. He said that this case should be seen in “the context of Iran’s worrying trend to arbitrarily detain EU nationals or dual nationals for political reasons”. Mr Stano pointed out that the EU was working very closely and coordinating with Sweden, “the country that has primary consular responsibility for its citizens”. (CG)
