20/06/2023 (Agence Europe) – In an interview broadcast on France 2 on Monday 19 June, American billionaire Elon Musk said that the social network Twitter, which he owns, would comply with European rules on combating disinformation and hatred online. “Twitter will obey the law. If a law is enacted, I repeat myself, Twitter is committed to respecting it”, he said, with the Digital Services Act (DSA) (see EUROPE 13185/5), which is designed to make the very largest online platforms more accountable, and in particular to encourage them to actively remove problematic content online, due to come into force on 25 August. There were doubts about Elon Musk’s willingness to bring Twitter into line with EU rules after he decided, on 26 May, to withdraw from the EU’s Code of Practice on Disinformation (see EUROPE 13194/4).
