19/06/23 (Agence Europe) – The first round of interinstitutional negotiations (‘trilogue’) on artificial intelligence (AI) under the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU will take place on 18 July. The European Parliament adopted its position at a plenary session on 14 June (see EUROPE 13201/1). An initial trilogue took place on the same day with the current Swedish Presidency of the EU Council. Initial discussions are expected to focus in particular on foundation models and the question of partial implementation of the text before the co-legislators reach a final agreement. This idea is defended in particular by the Italian co-rapporteur Brando Benifei (S&D). “I think we should discuss early implementation for foundation models and generative AI. This is a personal opinion, but in this specific area we need to see whether it is possible to speed up the entry into force”, he commented after the European Parliament vote. (TM)
