19/06/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 19 June, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, received the former European Commissioner for Innovation, Culture, Research, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel. She became Bulgaria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs following her resignation from the Commission (see EUROPE 13182/24), and this is her first official visit in her new role. While the aim of the meeting is to “review issues of mutual interest” to the EU and Bulgaria, Ms von der Leyen and Ms Gabriel are also expected to discuss the Bulgarian’s replacement in the College, according to the Commission spokesman. On Friday afternoon, Ms von der Leyen sent a letter to the Bulgarian authorities asking them to nominate a candidate for the post. She awaits their response. (HS)
