31/03/23 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 30 March, thirty MEPs from the Renew Europe group called on the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, to invite the CEO of the social network Tiktok, Shou Zi Chew, to a hearing at the European Parliament. The signatories of the letter believe that Tiktok’s links with the Chinese government and the social network’s practices in several areas, such as data privacy and security, “raise extremely serious concerns”. “No one is beyond democratic scrutiny, including media companies that have millions of European users”, according to Renew Europe’s elected representatives, who would like to use a hearing to take stock of Tiktok’s practices and “remind Mr Shou Zi Chew of his obligations under European law, in particular under the DSA (see EUROPE 13145/28) and the GDPR (see EUROPE 13130/25)”.
