24/03/23 (Agence Europe) – Several NGOs, associations and companies are calling on the negotiators of the Renewable Energy Directive to set a binding target for the EU of at least 45% of renewables in the energy mix by 2030, in a joint letter on Thursday 23 March. “The proposed 40% renewable energy target is outdated and does not reflect the current trilemma of rising energy costs, energy insecurity and worsening climate events that Europeans now must endure”, the letter says. The signatories state that a 45% target would cut gas imports in half from 40% - from 236 billion cubic metres to 118 - and that reducing gas imports will save the EU €200 billion by 2030.
