24/03/2023 (Agence Europe) – The High Representative of the Union told journalists, including EUROPE, that he would visit China “soon”, without giving a precise date. The trip should be an opportunity to discuss the war in Ukraine. According to Mr Borrell, although Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Moscow in mid-March, “Beijing wants to play down being associated with Russia’s military activities”, adding that the two countries had a “friendship without limits, (which) seems to have some limits”. “I think China does not want the situation (in Ukraine) to be mixed up with the Taiwan issue”, he said. Asked about the EU’s position on US-China relations, Mr Borrell answered that the EU should apply the “Sinatra doctrine: My Way”. In addition, the Commission spokesperson confirmed that President Ursula von der Leyen will visit China with French President Emmanuel Macron from 4 to 8 April. (CG)
