European Commission approves registration of Iceland’s first ever PDO

13/03/23 (Agence Europe)The European Commission announced, on Monday 13 March, the registration of Iceland’s first ever Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), ‘Íslenskt lambakjöt’. This PDO designates the meat of pure-bred Icelandic lambs, born, raised and slaughtered on the island of Iceland. The long tradition of sheep farming that has been passed down from generation to generation on the island has led to high standards of flock management and grazing methods. One of the best examples of traditional Icelandic cuisine is lamb meat soup. The Commission also approved the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) ‘Antakya Künefesi’ from Turkey, one of the few desserts containing cheese in Turkey. It is produced in the province of Hatay. These new names will be added to the list of 1,614 agricultural products already protected. (LC)
