The MEP Norbert Lins (EPP, German) wants the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee, of which he is Chair, to have competence for examining the proposal on carbon certification.
A letter to this effect was recently sent by Mr Lins to Bernd Lange (S&D, German), Chair of the European Parliament’s Conference of Committee Chairs.
The framework for certifying carbon removals “concerns in its vast majority land use managers such as farmers and foresters”, Norbert Lins (EPP) points out in the letter. He would like his committee to be associated with the Environment Committee, which is responsible for this matter. He is also requesting exclusive competence for certain parts of the text (‘carbon farming’).
Mr Lins said that the Agriculture and Environment Committees are organising a joint meeting on existing models for carbon credits stored in agricultural soils on 27 February. The European Parliament’s lead rapporteur on the proposal is Lídia Pereira (EPP, Portuguese) (see EUROPE 13098/26).
