The European Commission announced on Wednesday 8 February that it had appointed Helena Viñes Fiestas as Chair of the Platform on Sustainable Finance (see EUROPE 13077/18). Ms Viñes Fiestas is, inter alia, a commissioner of the Spanish Financial Markets Authority and a member of the UN High Level Panel on Net Zero Commitments.
The Commission also appointed the members of the new mandate. It selected 28 members and five observers from the private sector on the basis of their expertise in environmental and sustainable finance issues. The seven permanent members of the EU agencies and bodies were directly reappointed. In addition, nine EU institutions and international organisations were invited as observers.
The platform will advise the Commission on the European taxonomy and, more broadly, on the European framework for sustainable finance with a focus on usability. It will also monitor capital flows to sustainable investments.
“The goal is to make sure the Taxonomy and the whole sustainable finance framework work effectively in order to help the real economy in the transition”, explained Mairead McGuinness, Commissioner for Financial Services, in a statement. (Original version in French by Anne Damiani)
