Violence at EU’s external borders; Commission registers new European citizens’ initiative

13/01/2023 (Agence Europe)On Friday 13 January, the European Commission announced in a statement that it had decided to register a new European citizens’ initiative (ECI) on safeguarding fundamental rights at EU borders. This ECI is entitled “Article 4: Stop Torture and Inhuman Treatment at the Borders of Europe” and is promoted by the Italian collective ‘Basta violenza alle frontiere’. It concerns “the establishment of a framework to ensure compliance with the prohibition of violence and inhuman and degrading treatment enshrined in Article 4 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights in relation to the EU policies concerning border controls, asylum and immigration”, the Commission explains. The registration does not imply that the Commission in any way “confirms the factual correctness of the content of the initiative, which is the sole responsibility of the group of organisers”, it adds.
