Wholesale fossil gas prices return to pre-Russian invasion levels

03/01/2023 (Agence Europe)After peaking at over €350/MWh during August 2022, the Dutch TTF - the standard price indicator on the European gas markets - settled, on Tuesday 3 January, at around €75/MWh on the ICE Endex exchange. This is close to the level of wholesale gas prices prior to the armed Russian aggression against Ukraine on 24 February, but still far from the prices in the previous decade (between 5 and 35 euros/MWh). The rise in gas prices had started in 2021, mainly due to a significant increase in demand due to the post-Covid-19 economic recovery (see EUROPE 12795/13), before being strongly aggravated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
