The European Commission approved on Tuesday 15 November, in the margins of the ministerial council meeting of the Transport Community Treaty (TCT), a joint declaration aiming to involve Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia more closely in the work of the various bodies of the Transport Community.
“This is a first step in a process which I sincerely believe should lead to the enlargement of the Transport Community Treaty to include Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia as full members”, commented Transport Commissioner Adina Vălean.
Thus, in addition to providing a basis for further regional cooperation on transport, future work should include helping these three States to bring their transport systems into line with European transport rules.
The TCT meeting was also an opportunity to take stock of the progress made in the Western Balkans on technical standards, interoperability, safety, security, traffic management and environmental measures in the transport sector.
“I’m not seeing as much progress as I had hoped. Therefore, we discussed the need for more sustained efforts on both sides. However, I have noted that most progress has been made on measures where we have supported our regional partners. This underlines the need for additional technical support”, said Ms Vălean.
As a reminder, the Transport Community brings together all EU Member States as well as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia and is intended to assist in the integration of the Western Balkans transport system into that of the EU.
