02/11/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 1 November, the NGOs SOS Méditerranée and IFRC (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) called on the EU Member States to help them find a safe port to disembark 234 people rescued at sea between 22 and 26 October in the central Mediterranean. The NGOs have asked Rome for permission to disembark and are calling on the Member States to enforce maritime law. “People rescued in the central Mediterranean by humanitarian vessels should and must be allowed to disembark in a safe place within a reasonable time, as is the case for search and rescue operations carried out by authorities and merchant vessels. The ever-increasing blockages faced by rescue vessels in this part of the sea since 2018 are discriminatory and unacceptable”, a statement said. (SP)
