18/10/2022 (Agence Europe) – Ahead of the European Council on 20–21 October, European industry trade unions, IndustriAll, and the European association representing the steel sector, Eurofer, are calling for “urgent” European action to safeguard the steel sector and related jobs, in a joint appeal that was published on Monday 17 October. They explained that the sector is suffering from energy costs that are seven times higher than before the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a carbon price that is too high (around €70 per tonne). The organisations are calling for new EU funding for the implementation of a potential SURE 2.0 instrument, which would be based on the SURE instrument model set up during the Covid-19 pandemic (see EUROPE 13029/26). They are also insisting on a series of measures to limit the price of gas and electricity and on appropriate revisions of the Waste Shipment Regulation (see EUROPE 12992/12).
